Chapter 6

Rotary drilling

Geocore operates a fleet of cutting-edge Comacchio rigs suitable for all manner of geotechnical investigations.

The Geocore fleet starts small with the Comacchio 205, which is ideal for sites with difficult access – domestic properties and basements. In the middle, we have the 405, which like 205, is very capable of dynamic sampling through superficial sub-surface materials. In our experience, these rigs often provide a more cost-effective solution for our clients, instead of the traditional two rig approach of Cable Percussion followed by Rotary drilling.

At the other end of the fleet, we have two Comacchio MC900GT’s. These vast rigs are designed to deliver large, multiple borehole sites. They are also the perfect solution for ‘difficult’ deep boreholes where casing may be required due to the nature of the sub-surface structure. For example, we have used the MC900GT on sites in London, drilling to depths over 70m, simultaneously casing through the Thanet sands.

The Geocore Rotary team includes a number of highly experienced engineers. Our on-site team work closely with the office staff to provide rigs and crew anywhere in the UK and beyond.

Geocore have experience on the following sites…

  • Railways
  • Mine working Investigations
  • New Buildings – including multi-storey commercial projects and domestic properties
  • Contaminated land investigation
  • Gypsum investigations

We also offer Geobore S which enables high quality and cost-effective ‘undisturbed’ class 1 core samples in 4” (102mm).

The Hole World
Geocore is proud to operate internationally. We have successfully delivered equipment and services in India. Working closely with local engineers in Bangalore, we have provided dynamic sampling, coring and the installation of monitoring wells for several Bangalore sites.

Ground Source Drilling

This technique involves drilling vertically down below the earth’s surface to depths of 50-300m, inserting either a 32mm or 42mm loop that will hereafter be used to circulate a water/antifreeze mixture. Ground Source Heat retrieval involves pumping water through these pipes because the mixture is at a lower temperature than the ground it is travelling through it warms up slightly. This low-grade heat is then transferred to a heat pump where it is used to ‘heat’ the refrigerant inside the unit. The heat pump then compressing the ‘warmed’ refrigerant further to create more heat. The output from the heat pump is typically 45ºC – 50ºC, for interior ‘space’ heating and up to 55ºC for domestic hot water.

Geothermal drilling just got a hole lot quicker…and a hole lot more cost effective too

Geocore was the first company in the UK to deliver Geothermal installation using the MC900GT Rig. Embracing this new technology that has brought with it an outstanding new level of performance in the commercial closed-loop geothermal market.

This hydraulic crawler rig is designed specifically to make the installation of geothermal heat loops faster, more efficient and more cost-effective than ever before…whatever the ground conditions…up to 300m deep. It will also allow the go-ahead of previously unviable large commercial projects.

A hole lot quicker…

Perfect for large domestic, multi-build and commercial sites, the MC900GT makes easy work of ground loop installation with its double head allowing simultaneous drilling and casing.

Featuring a carousel that holds a massive 126 metres of rods and casing, plus a super-efficient fully automated feed, on site time can now be dramatically reduced with virtually no manual handling. And when used in conjunction with one of our mud recycling systems, it leaves virtually no mess.

A hole lot more cost effective.

As they say, time is money…which means when you drill down through the figures, the MC900GT will make a big difference to your bottom line too.

With the high capacity carousel and auto-feed making quick work of the project, on-site drilling can be accomplished in around half the normal time. Simultaneous drilling and casing also eliminate the risk of the hole collapsing, further reducing expensive delays.

This cutting edge technology brings with it some big price cuts. We pride ourselves on the quality of our work, embracing the worlds best drilling equipment ensures that we deliver an even higher quality solution with no mess and less time on site which means less cost to you. We offer a fixed price per borehole on large drilling projects and whilst we are confident that our costs are extremely competitive if you find the same service cheaper elsewhere we will do all we can to beat any like for like quote.

Now see the hole thing.

Seeing is believing…Geocore operates a fleet of two MC900GT’s in the UK. This setup allows the mobilisation of multiple rigs, increasing productivity and reducing time on site. For example, using our fleet of rigs we have been able to deliver seventy, 150m deep boreholes, quicker and more cost effectively than anyone else in the UK. The easiest way to see just what our MC900GT’s can do for you…is to put them to the test.
